George Harrison, the youngest Beatle, died of cancer yesterday. I can't say that I ever really listened to the Beatles much, except for the occasionally tune while listening to the "oldies," but I do feel a sense of sadness because I know that this will affect a lot of people around the world; and because it harolds the fact that my parents generation, the Baby Boomers, are not immortal: They will die one day, just as we all will.

Google looked like this 3 years ago; and here's Yahoo from 5 years ago. Hee.

I actually found the title of the book that I was writing about in my October 26 entry, and I wasn't even looking for it, just stumbled across an entry about it on Boing Boing: Fascinating Womanhood. Amazing. (I can hardly believe there are people out there who would give this book a good review!)

I'm currently reading "The Day I Became an Autodidact," by Kendall Hailey. The author seems somewhat arrogant to me, but I think she realizes that she is, so that makes up for it a bit. She also saids some really great stuff (I'll get some quotes) soon.

A 19-year-old freshman at Durham Tech was visited by two Secret Service agents, just because she had a political poster on her wall. "If the Secret Service has nothing better to do than check on political posters, that's a bad sign."

Bizarre Record Covers. Some of the names are hilarious: Winky Foote, The Singing Rambos, etc.

Yay, finally "web advertising that doesn't suck." (I've seen these on Google and they definitely are much better than the traditional banner ads; and yes, I'm more likely to click on the text ad. Hmm, but ask me about that in about 6 months: I may not feel the same way.)

I was wondering if my family was the only one who ate Thanksgiving dinner outside. Well, we weren't. (Just to let you know: We live in s. Texas -- it was about 75 degrees.)

(Too bad I don't really enjoy Radiohead *blasphemy!* Heh.) I think this is probably the lamest online test I've ever taken...must stop taking them.

The weirdest thing happened to my Sim last night: She was abducted by aliens. (I'd upload some pics, but my computer has no 'net connection.) I sure hope they didn't probe her too much. Heh.

News for web users that write back. Nice.

Mwahahahahaha.

(Drum roll, please) Introducing: The Diet Slurpee!

Heh: Kevin's Oddly Different Story Time.

Better watch out, Disney's after your children and you! ;)

F*CK MTV!: Music Video Review Weblog. Good idea. They take submissions, too.

Why does "everyone" love Photoshop so much? Sure, it's a good program, but there are many other programs out there that can do just as good a job or *gasp* even a better job than Photoshop.

The Pornography of Semiotics: 24 Hours in the Life of MTV. I think I would have pulled my hair out if I'd had to do that; but hey, he did it willingly -- anything for a bit of publicity, I guess.

Hahahaha. Why is that funny? Hmm, I guess I'm just in a goofy mood.

I'm pretty sure I linked this not long ago, but I'll go ahead and link it once more: Yesterday Land.

This is actually quite scary. Welcome to the future.

Happy Thanksgiving to all Americans out there! I hope you all have a great day. (Not to exclude anyone else...you know I wish a wonderful day for everyone!)

If I could pick my own name, I would definitely not choose "Dickson" or "Piggy"! Maybe something more along the lines of "Unique." (Just joking, of course!)

Early Sunday morning I went out to see the Leonid meteor shower with my family and a friend. It was amazing: the best I've ever seen (and probably will ever see, since the shower was the best that's supposed to be for the next 100 years.) We sat out in the country for 3 hours, just gaping at the sky, entranced. And they were still going on as we left; in fact, I saw one last night, too!

This season of the X-Files has been ok. The first two episodes have kept my attention, so even though Mulder (Ok, he's not the only reason I watched the show...just one of the main reasons. Heh.) is "just gone," I'll keep watching.

The fARM. I love webzines! (Then I should be working on my own, I know!)

Ok, so this may not be politically correct, but it's funny!

Here's a list of "corrupt" CDs (i.e. CDs that you can't copy for your personal use or play on computers, DVD players, game consoles like PlayStation, MP3 players, consumer CD duplicators, high-end stereo equipment and car CD players)

small.spiral.notebook (know of any good webzines/ezines? Let me know!)

I had no idea that there were so many weblog tools out there! (Pitas, I love ya, but I may be moving soon. Heh.)

Right now, I'm not using any IM program, but I may have to download Trillian, as it's compatible with AOL IM, ICQ, MSN Messenger, IRC, and Yahoo! Messenger.

Way back in late early '99, I had a personal page and it was a typical teenage site: angst-ridden and black (even though I wasn't really angst-ridden) I soon got bored with it and decided to spice it up by adding new content each day: a poem, a link, a picture. I kept that up for a while before my interest waned. And why do I mention that now? No reason in particular, except that it now seems like I was keeping a weblog without even knowing it.

And now, in memory of those old days, I present a quote:

"Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life; define yourself."
-Harvey Fierstein

"An optician who conned the NHS in order to provide 'deprived' children with spectacles, has been given a suspended prison sentence."
Way to go, doc!

I was watching MTV yesterday (Don't ask why! I usually abhore the channel.) and they were interviewing the young actor who plays Harry Potter in the new Harry Potter movie. They asked him if he tried to bring something new to the character and the kid said that no, he didn't, because J.K. Rowling was like the new Shakespeare and he didn't want to "muck around" with the story or character. (The new Shakespeare?! Hahahahaha.) I've never read any of the Harry Potter books, and I definitely don't plan to now!

Parents, you'd better keep your eyes open: Your children may be abusing PHP! Heh.

So, is he the infamous Tourist Guy?

My viking name is:

Jódís Sheeptipper
(Well, actually, that wouldn't really be your name -- since you're female, your name would be something like "Jódís Björnsdottir". But this is the twenty-first century, and you want to be known for who you are, not for who your father was, right? Right.)

Your Viking Personality: The tougher Vikings might let you on the boat, but generally only when they need ballast. You are strong and tireless, frequently shouldering burdens that would tire lesser women. You probably know which end of a sword to hold, but you're not a fearsome fighter by any stretch of the imagination.

You would have a very tough time making a long sea voyage in a Viking longboat. Other Vikings tolerate your presence, though they're not quite sure if they can trust you to fight dirty.

People who've known you for a while don't always trust your word. You sometimes come off as a bit of a snob. Vikings are not snobbish people -- they either like you, or they kill you. Try to be more like a Viking.

Hmm, sounds a bit like me.

A Latvian teenager is being charged with "endangering the health and life of a foreign dignitary" for, as Megg put it, bitch-slapping Prince Charles with a flower; she could face up to 15 years in prison.

I suspect she better be glad she didn't do the same thing to President Bush; if she had, she'd probably be dead right now or at least have a broken arm. I guess the Prince's security isn't that tight.

By the way, Prince Charles is shocked by the severity of the girl's possible punishment.

Ok, enough about that, already!

Michael Jackson doesn't want his children to go go "into society," so he's going to build them a school on his property. Nothing wrong with that, but my first reaction was, "Ya know what, Michael? We don't want them, anyway!" Heh. (

On a side note: I realy like the BBC news site. It's great to be able to get non-Americentric news!)

Surprised? Not me.

Hey, guys, you can start eating licorice again.

Ok, these people have to be perverted.

This is an absolute shame! I am so incensed about it! Denying firefighters the right to look for their comrades and fellow citizens is about the most anti-American thing you could do, I believe.

So, should we get flu shots or not this year?

If you don't learn from history, you're bound to repeat it.

Now on to some lighter news:

"...executives and analysts say, prime-time shows will look more like their daytime counterparts, the soap operas: Each series paid for by a major advertiser, its creative and budgetary resources kept on a very, very short leash."

Already, I don't watch very much TV; it looks like if the things described in the above article become reality, I will be watching drastically less, maybe not watching at all.

A few days ago, I submitted Eclectica to be reviewed on TheWeblogReview.com. I didn't know what sort of review I'd get back and was pleasantly surprised to find that I got a 4 out of 5. Not bad.

Anyway, I just noticed that my weblog ID is 666 (see the url). Good thing I'm not superstitious!

If you read the review, you can see that the reviewer thinks I don't talk about myself enough. Well, it is true that I don't say much about myself; I never intended Eclectica to be a journal-y type 'blog. I've tried keeping an online journal, but it just turned out - well, blah.

But since you might be interested, here's a bit about me:

I'm 20-years-old (Going to be 21 on November 9th. Seven more days!). I live in south Texas. I get the feeling that when most people think about south Texas, they imagine San Antonio or Houston, but I live even farther south than that. I was born in Minneapolis, MN and lived there until I was 7, though.

I was homeschooled or "unschooled" for most of my elementary and high school years. I'm not currently in college, nor do I know if I plan to enter any time soon. I work as a online content producer for a major (well, as major as you can get in south Texas) newspaper. It's an ok job, but it's not what I want to be doing for the rest of my life, most definitely!

I could go on about my hobbies, the music I listen to, my pets, my family, etc., but as I've said, I never wanted Eclectica to be a journal blog; plus, just pay attention to my posts: I usually throw in a few personal comments.

I know I've linked to How Much Is Inside? before, but he's added some new items since then.

I'm going to try to update as much as possible during the first couple weeks of this month, but I have a huge project to do at work, so I can't guarantee any major updating. I'll try, though.

November is Nation Novel Writing Month. Think you can write a novel in a month? Then sign up today (last day to do so.) I signed up, just for the heck of it. The writing doesn't have to be perfect, and hey, once I'm finished, I can say I've written a novel ;)

'...Morrison walked up to three terminals Sunday wearing a cowboy hat, with the swords protruding from the waistband of his jeans..." Heh.

The X-Files' 9th season starts on November 11th. I'm eagerly awaiting it. Even though Mulder is not mentioned (that I know of) and I find the Monica Reyes character to be quite annoying. Oh, well, nothing's perfect -- and at least Scully is still around.

Speaking of Scully, Gillian Anderson has grown her hair longer. I think it looks nice.

More X-Files blather:
Cary Elwes is going to be on the X-Files?! I've only known him to play in spoofs, like Robin Hood: Men in Tights ("Tight tights!" Heh.) I didn't know he was "serious" actor.

I haven't had time to look at this, so I'm mostly posting it so that I don't forget about it. Looks interesting, though.

"Genius Awards Granted": Each of the recipents gets $500,000, no strings attached. You don't really have to be a genius to receive the award. Here's what the president of the foundation who gives out the award said about the winners:

"These are people who provide the imagination and fresh ideas that can improve people's lives and bring about movement on important issues"

It's nice to know that people are rewarded for their imagination.

At first, I was glad to hear that Johnatan Franzen objected to being on Oprah's Book Club, but then I read his reasons and now I'm not so sure. I understand his not wanting the Oprah logo to appear on all of his books, yet why doesn't he want as wide an audience as possible to read his work?

Erm, what?

From Virtual Marginalia:The Art of Cooking and Serving. That reminds me of an old book that I found somewhere all about how women have to do be in submission to men always and how that being that way actually makes women happy -- and it was written by a woman! I wish I could remember the title of it. It was printed in the late 60s or early 70s. A backlash against feminism, I guess.

Next on my reading list. If I can find it at the library, that is. I object to paying $20 or more for a book that I will read in a few days. Unless it's an absolutely fantastic and useful book, I will not shell out the cash.

The Mirror Project. I've been thinking about buying a digital camera. Now I have one more reason to do so ;)

Afer the events of Sept. 11, America's "news borders" greatly expanded. I'm not surprised. I'm sure others, like me, got quickly tired of hearing the same reports over and over again. Even before the attacks, I wasn't a big fan of mainstream American media; it's nice to know that others feel the same way as I do.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but what are they not telling us?!

Nice. I will definitely be visiting again.

Don't agree with something, want to change your country, city, neighborhood? Check out Protest.net. Maybe if you're really daring, you can make a ruckus.

I'm always suspicious when companies get patriotic when there's a war going on, just as I hate it when everyone suddenly starts to talk about praying and God as soon as the first mention of any sort of tragedy hits the airwaves. Not that I have anything against praying or God or patriotism. It just seems rather phony to me.

I wonder if this could be true, or if Altman is truly egotistical and thinks that Hollywood really wields that much power.

Britney Spears is so stupid: She jepordized her $97.5 million deal with Pepsi by being seen drinking Coke and Sunkist.

This cracked me up: "let us find your solemate." That was the title of a piece of spam I received today. Yes, my soles are just dying to meet their mates. Heh.

Seinfeld is still one of my favorite shows, but - ugh - "Elaine" is getting her own show. I will not be watching, unless by some miracle, it's actually funny and/or interesting.

Cheese house? Art?! It's all in the eye of the beholder, I guess.

I should have said something about this before, but I was just so disgusted that I didn't even feel like writing. But now I do. I do not think the U.S. should be bombing Afghanistan right now. What are we really accomplishing, besides killing innocent Afghanis and possibly starting WWIII?

I love my country and I'm still in shock over what happened on Sept. 11, yet I feel there has to be a different way to solve this. I doubt that the government sees it that way, though.

This is too weird: Bert is showing up on Osama bin Laden propaganda posters.

I don't have any links to post right now. Sorry, but I've hardly been surfing at all lately.

I think the lyrics to "Why," by Tracy Chapman are especially meaningful right now. I've always liked this song, but I like it even more now.

Why?
By Tracy Chapman

Why do the babies starve
When there's enough food to feed the world
Why when there're so many of us
Are there people still alone

Why are the missiles called peace keepers
When they're aimed to kill
Why is a woman still not safe
When she's in her home

Love is hate
War is peace
No is yes
And we're all free

But somebody's gonna have to answer
The time is coming soon
Admidst all these questions and contradictions
There're some who seek the truth

But somebody's gonna have to answer
The time is coming soon
When the blind remove their blinders
And the speechless speak the truth
